Monthly Wrap-Up: May 2014

On the blog this month

This month I reviewed a total of 11 books!

Best of the bunch? That would probably have to be The Glass Republic by Tom Pollock! It was an intense and riveting sequel to The City's Son, and I loved Pen as the protagonist so much.

Of these, 6 were books I'd classify as LGBTQ. That's The Beast of Callaire (lesbian MC, bisexual love interest), Coda (bisexual MC), Tides (a relationship between two ladies that's not the central romance but a major focus nonetheless), Shadowplay (intersex genderfluid bisexual MC), Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe (gay MCs), and The Glass Republic (female MC who likes girls – not entirely sure if she would identify as lesbian or bisexual). Blue had a minor gay character whose storyline was a pretty good side plot, but it was not major enough that I'd put it in my LGBTQ tag.

I also posted my first ever discussion post!

And I participated in Armchair BEA!

Oh, and I started participating in the Sunday Post meme and posting my book hauls every Sunday. Including this post, I made 23 posts this month! That's 90% more posts than last month. o:

Coming up next month

MHAM

June is Mental Health Awareness Month, hosted by Ula @ Blog of Erised and Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts. (It's not too late to sign up if you haven't already! Sign-ups are open for one more day.) I currently have a list of six books to read for this event.

Crazy by Amy Reed
I Don't Want to be Crazy by Samantha Schutz
Amy & Matthew by Cammie McGovern
A Voice in the Distance by Tabitha Suzuma
Dr Bird's Advice for Sad Poets by Evan Roskos
These Gentle Wounds by Helene Dunbar

I may add to this list, but I have a lot of other things on my TBR too! The rest of my TBR is probably constantly shifting, so I won't put it here.

What was your favourite book that you read this month? (:

  1. 11 books! That's awesome. I was a total slacker in May (but I have some review books waiting so I should be posting at least 3 real reviews next month...)

Thanks for listing your tbr list for MHAM! I'm adding A Note of Madness & A Voice in the Distance and These Gentle Wounds to my maybe list :)

  2. Wow, 11 books, great reading month! Love that you're doing MHAM, it brings a smile to my face. Dr. Birds Advice for Sad Poets is one of my favourite books dealing with mental health, great addition to any TBR :D

  3. Looks like May was a good month! You reviewed a lot of great-looking books I haven't heard of before. Adding Tides and the first Micah Grey book to my TBR.

  4. I am slowly making my way through your reviews for this month. Might take me a few days, but I will catch up! You've had a fantastic month! You must read so fast! My favourite book I read this month is probably Breakable by Tammara Webber! SUCH a great sequel to Easy! I loved it!

I'm so glad I've started following your blog on Bloglovin'. I've discovered more LGBTQ YA novels in just this past week than I do in several :)

  6. Oh wow, that's amazing! I can't believe you actually went and commented on all my reviews. o: You're an awesome commenter and I love you! <3 I'm so glad you think my blog was worth following. I will definitely try and reply to all your comments once I've finished writing this seriously confusing essay.

I actually feel so slow at reading compared to a lot of book bloggers... I tend to average 100 YA pages (fonts are bigger and/or lines more spaced out) in 1.5 hours, more or less, and I manage to free up about two to three afternoons each week to read. I usually manage to finish a book in one afternoon if I concentrate hard, so that results in two to three books a week, hence 11-12 books a month. (I totally forgot that I actually read another book this month but that review isn't going up till October!)

Mmm, I really should try getting into NA! I have not read any NA books ever.

  7. Yeah, it was a good month! I'm actually so surprised that I managed to read this many books, since May has been my first ever whole month at uni and book blogging at the same time. Before I went back to uni I told myself, "I'd be happy with reviewing 6-8 books a month once I'm at uni!" Since I have to do all this academic reading and write two essays a week (min. 2k each) every week. But I'm pretty pleased I managed to work out a good schedule. Hope you enjoy Tides and the Micah Grey series! They're both fantastic. (:

  9. Haha, thanks. (I actually read 12 books! I forgot about Tell Me Again How a Crush Should Feel, I read that in May but my review isn't going up till October. I feel so accomplished, haha.) Looking forward to your reviews. (:

    Yay!

  10. Wow- you've had a busy month!
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is one of my all-time favourite books. I'd never heard of The Glass Republic before but I'm going to check it out now!
Thanks for adding your link into Best of the Bunch :)

  11. Wow, ELEVEN BOOKS! I don't even think I've posted that many this year, well done. Also I loved your discussion post, I haven't commented on it yet but I have put it in my "2014 Awesome Book Discussions" bookmark on my browser.

For the Mental Health Awareness well I applaud you so much for doing this, I particularly have a very close connection to mental health issues as it runs quite a bit in my family and I think there is still a lot of people in the world who are still ignorant to the idea that mental health is nothing more than just schizophrenia. "I Don't Want to be Crazy" is an amazing read, its so broken down and authentic that it really tugged at my heart while reading it, I hope you like it just as much as I did and have a happy reading in June.

  13. The Glass Republic is the second in a trilogy. The first one is The City's Son, which I gave 4 stars to-- The Glass Republic was ridiculously good, and I hope the third book will be even better! I hope you enjoy it if you check it out. (: Yeah, I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone, really hope I'll be able to get round to reading the sequel soon.

  14. I keep feeling like I need to post at least 2 reviews a week or something, haha. Glad to hear you liked my discussion post! I really want to post more but I haven't been able to come up with any ideas yet.

(: Yeah, I've known quite a few people who've suffered from mental health issues. My boyfriend for one has really bad anxiety, so it's something I care about a lot. I'm glad to hear you liked I Don't Want to be Crazy, I'm really looking forward to reading it. (:

Thanks for stopping by and commenting! <3
